Destruction caused by a war or an all natural disaster does not result in increasing wealth nor will it kick-start aggregate demand, primarily because most of the supply is destroyed. A war or an all natural disaster is a type of an exogenous shock that also reallocates resources, but it is highly unlikely that is the most efficient allocation.

In addition, so far the US experienced a whole lot worse and more costly hurricanes (see the graph above), and none of them of these appeared to have had a positive impact on increasing GDP or increasing wealth, especially not in the neighborhood areas. Think about New Orleans after hurricane Katrina, or the BP oil spill, or even better, Japan earthquake and tsunami in 2011, and what they all meant for economic growth. The Montgomery Bus Boycott started on December 5, 1955 after Rosa Parks was caught for refusing to stop her seat to a white man on the bus.

The boycott lasted for 381 days and finished on December 21, 1956, with the desegregation of the Montgomery bus system. The boycott was completed by the newly established Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA). Martin Luther King, Jr. served as President and Ralph David Abernathy offered as Program Director. It was one of history’s most dramatic and massive nonviolent protests, stunning the nation, and the world. The boycott was also a signal to Black America to begin a fresh phase of the long struggle, a phase that came to be known as the modern civil rights movement.
