We are located in East Central Illinois 40 kilometers western of Champaign/Urbana. Given that we are deep into the beekeeping season the biggest challenge is to make sure you have a solid queen. It’s amazing how often queen expire or disappear? Maybe your hive is trying to replace their queen by increasing a new one but it is merely now working.
Sometimes queens just need replaced. Here are several reasons why you may want to substitute your queen. She’s getting old. When a queen is over the age of 2 or 3 3 years, there is a risk that she may stop laying during winter. Many beekeeper examine their colonies late winter and discover a queen is needed by them. But, in the year it is nearly impossible to find a queen that early. To make sure you have a wholesome queen through the wintertime, substitute your queen in June or July. Now is the time! Replacing a queen can also create a break in the brood cycle thus reducing mites.
And you need a large variety of new bees in the fall to be your winter bees. Can you trust your old queen to complete the job? Beekeepers can accidentally kill the queen while removing honey supers. Usually do not assume you have a good laying queen. Make certain and if you fail to find your queen, order your queen today.
